Landing page vs website: which does your business need?

The difference between a landing page and a website, when each one is the right choice, what each costs in Nigeria and why many businesses end up needing both.

Both open in a browser and both can bring in customers, so the two get confused all the time. The difference isn’t size or price. It’s the job each one does, and choosing the wrong one usually means paying for traffic that never turns into business.

The short answer

  • A website presents your whole business to every kind of visitor: customers, partners, funders and recruits
  • A landing page is built for one audience, one offer and one action, usually for a campaign, a launch or a waitlist
  • If you are about to spend money on ads for one offer, you need a landing page. If people look you up and find nothing, you need a website

What a website is for

People check you online before they get in touch. A website answers the questions they bring: who you are, what you do, who you have done it for and how to reach you. A business website typically has Home, About, Services, Work, Contact and FAQ pages, and your team can update it without a developer.

Because it serves everyone, a website rarely makes one offer well. That isn’t a flaw. It’s the job.

What a landing page is for

Someone who clicked an ad about one thing arrives with one question. A landing page answers it and asks for one action: book a consultation, register, request a quote or join a waitlist. It can be long or short. What defines it is that every section moves one audience toward one action.

That focus is why it works for campaigns. There are no menus or competing buttons to wander off through, and tracking such as the Meta Pixel can tell you which ad produced which enquiry.

When to choose a landing page

  • You are running paid ads and sending them to your homepage
  • You are launching a product or service that deserves more than a paragraph on your website
  • You want sign-ups for an event, programme, webinar or cohort
  • You want to test demand for a product before you build it
  • You have a seasonal offer or a promotion with a deadline

When to choose a website

  • Customers, partners or funders look you up and find only a social media page, or nothing
  • Your current site looks older than your business, or is hard to use on a phone
  • You want to be found on Google for the services you offer
  • You sell several services to different kinds of client

Why many businesses need both

The website does the work of credibility and search. Each campaign gets its own landing page, built around the promise its ad makes. A landing page can live on your main domain, such as yourcompany.com/offer, or on a domain of its own, whichever suits your tracking and your current site.

If you already pay for traffic and want the whole website to turn it into enquiries, there is a third option: a conversion website, planned around how your buyers decide. We compare it with a business website in Business website or conversion website?
